From: Josip Rodin Subject: new mirror arrangements Hi, Matthias Waddenstein (of ftp.se.debian.org), Adam Lackorzynski (of ftp.de.debian.org) and myself (of ftp.hr.debian.org) have come up with a little plan to make Debian updates faster. The thing is, ftp-master triggers European mirrors 13 minutes after the American ones. In addition to that, it's not tuned up to allow for faster transfers on large distances, like the one we all have to go through, over the Atlantic. This is because the provider doesn't allow larger bandwidth peaks because our mirror time is their peak user load time. In addition, no vacancies are available on ftp-master, so we only have three push-primary sites in Europe right now. They struggle within the ~2.5 MB/s that ftp-master is allowed to with eight other sites, six of which are in the States and have a head start. So, we figured, so what if we can't change that? Let's make just one European server get from ftp-master, and let others get from it. The first rsync (from ftp-master) will be faster since the remote side won't be so clogged, and the others will be faster because that one European server is sitting on a semi-dedicated 100Mbps segment, and is soon to be upgraded to 1000Mbps :) It also has 2*1.2 GHz processors and 2 GB of RAM, so it's fast enough to easily sustain large transfers that we do. The aforementioned three people have found a suitable server, mine, which has negligible local traffic and is connected via GEANT, which makes it a decent candidate. If anyone can suggest an even better location, it's too late ;) We're probably going to get a dedicated machine in the future for this, and then we'll assign it an official .debian.org name, distribute its keys to several locations for redundancy, etc. [...] It'll probably be a straightforward upgrade. I'll be mailing most of the people who have official mirrors in Europe and mirror from current tier1 sites. For some, changing from one tier1 to another shouldn't be noticeable, but given that there are many other unofficial sites already mirroring from the existing tier1 servers, the existing tier1 servers are much more loaded, and this should be avoided if possible. Thanks! --
